A Feel for Fashion: Alex Consani

Interviews

California-born Alex Consani, the 20-year-old model and social media star, has that extra something special – she’s just utterly captivating (some online have already elevated her to “super” status). It’s evinced by her appearances on runways for the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier couture and Thom Browne (as a golden bug) to her virtual personality – one viral TikTok of her vibing with a water carafe at brunch amassed millions and millions of views and spinoffs. She’s funny. She’s brash. And she’s fearless: Consani is transgender, and became one of the world’s youngest transgender models before signing with IMG in 2019. She’s booked, she’s busy and here, she’s giving her feel for fashion.

What excites you in fashion right now?

The ability to play a character! I think the artistic side of fashion is coming out in a much more prevalent way than ever before.

What is one reason to be optimistic about the state of fashion going forward?

I see more in the queer community doing runways, in campaigns, and being given the opportunity to use their voices.

In what ways do you think AI might benefit fashion?

It allows things physically impossible to be done, especially in photography.

Who or what will drive the greatest change in fashion this year?

I think trans women and the fight for correct representation will always be a driving force, none more present than now.

Can you suggest a fashion mantra for 2024?

Be confident in everything you can because without confidence you can’t truly embrace the beauty of your self.

What impact might you hope to have on fashion through your work?

I hope to create an environment where being authentic in personality as well as in identity is celebrated, while also celebrating true diversity. Not just what is digestible to the consumer.
