Dreaming with GmbH

Interviews

Within one season of launching their Berlin-based brand GmbH, Serhat Isik and Benjamin Huseby were nominated for the LVMH Prize. This recognition in 2017, along with critical praise from key publications, quickly validated how their vision and intentions mirror our times by addressing youth culture, upcycled fabrics and the constant theme of techno music. Their brand name, which is German for a limited liability company, twists a generic designation into something highly specific. Last year, the designers were appointed creative directors of Italian brand Trussardi and make their debut next month.

Are you dreamers?
Yes.

Had you dreamed of becoming a designer?
Benjamin: Yes, always.
Serhat: No.

Do you try to interpret your sleeping dreams?
Yes, if they are disturbing.

Do you get creative ideas from your sleeping dreams?
The text we chose for the calligraphy prints for this collection came to us in a dream.

Have you ever translated a dream into an actual design?
Constantly.

In what moments do you dream best (sleeping, daydreaming, walking)?
Walking in the cemetery by our studio and listening to music.

To what extent do you think fashion is about proposing/selling dreams?
It’s all about sex.

Do dreams help us make sense of reality or do they help us escape?
Both
