Rui’s Beauty of Imperfection

Interviews

Chinese designer Rui Zhou, comes from a small city in the center of China surrounded by the nature and she brings those feelings to fashion. She explores the beauty of imperfection, softness, fragility and in this collection, expecially, she works on the shells' textures to talk about our private lives.

Why is it important that fashion is always evolving, that it never stays the same?

Aim to bring creativity, vitality, and changes in life, like arts.

What moment, design, or collection marked a turning point for you?

My Parsons MFA graduation collection brought me opportunities to knock on the door, and LVMH Karl Lagerfeld Prize in 2021 got me some recognition in the fashion industry in some way.

What would you like us to know about this collection?

In this season, we attempt to create an enclosed private experience by describing the texture of the "shell". A curved, enveloping structure that appears in a soft silhouette, builds up a safety zone of softness, where here trajectories of everything run across each other, and all the stirring sounds come back to peace...

How well do you think fashion is embracing various societal shifts: gender, inclusion, diversity, and environmental engagement?

It's one of the most active and openest fields. Brands show a wide diversification in model selection, not giving up on embracing individuality. We also see a great awareness of the gradual force of environmental engagement, even if it is not an easy journey.

Evolution is gradual; revolution is radical. Is fashion still capable of revolution?

It could be possible because fashion gets influenced by the global economic situation and lifestyle every seconds.
