Paris Revisited

For its reopening to the public, the Carnavalet Museum, the museum of the history of the City of Paris, presents “Henri Cartier-Bresson – Paris Revisited”, an exhibition on the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the greatest French photographers of the 20th Century. The museum, in collaboration with the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation, revisits the artist’s connections with a city where he has always lived and which has inspired him artistically. The curators of the exhibition, Anne de Mondenard, chief curator at the Carnavalet Museum – Histoire de Paris, Agnès Sire, artistic director and Aude Raimbault, curator of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation’s collections, propose to discover original prints, including some thirty unpublished ones, publications, as well as audio-visual recordings by the artist himself.

Described as a “photographer of the instant”, Henri Cartier-Bresson transports us to a timeless black and white Paris, from past to present. Strolling through the city with his camera, he captured a city in motion surrounded by its monuments. The quays, the street, the bookshops, the overhead railway serve as a magical backdrop to these scenes of the daily life.
