A Take On Fashion: Chioma Nnadi
In September 2020, Chioma Nnadi became editor of Vogue.com, overseeing all content on the publication’s website. Joining the American magazine as a fashion editor in 2010 and assuming the role of fashion news director four years later, her coverage and experience has spanned cogent cover stories to astute yet breezy fashion reviews. Based in New York as a London transplant, Nnadi’s enthusiasm for fashion – especially in supporting less represented talents – comes through in both her writing and her personal style.
To what extent do you think fashion is about proposing and/or selling dreams?
For me, the most compelling vision of fashion is always transformative in some way, and has the ability to transport my imagination to new places. That said, I do think it’s important that the dream of fashion is somehow grounded in reality – especially now. We’re in a moment when fantasy for fantasy’s sake just doesn’t make sense.
How might this have a positive effect on people?
I think the most satisfying kind of fashion is the kind that moves you and lifts you up. In that sense a little dose of escapism goes a long way.
What is one trend or item of clothing that will define the coming year?
I think it’s always tricky to speak in terms of trends, but there is definitely a hedonistic mood in the air. After everything we’ve been through in the last two years, the impulse to go out and party, show a bit of skin, and enjoy each other’s company is definitely coming through in the collections.
What would be your fashion dream-come-true?
Oh, that’s a tough one! I think to go back in time to the battle of Versailles. It just seemed like such an epic moment in fashion history – what a dream to have witnessed that first-hand!
