In which ways might fashion creativity effectively drive growth across the industry?
Fashion is currently undergoing a significant transition. Factors such as the natural environment, social circumstances, the development and progress of new technologies, the dominance of electronic media, and the shift in fashion leadership are all related to this change. For instance, in response to environmental concerns and rapidly advancing technologies, adopting sustainable materials is essential. Not only does this play a crucial role in new creations, but it is also recognised as a forward-thinking approach to social issues. The surprising progress in technological innovations —such as AI, 3D printing, and biotechnology — is driving entirely new creations in fashion. Collaboration and exchanging ideas with other fields are more important than ever. These new efforts to address these challenges will lead to fresh creations, while simultaneously strengthening and renewing brand images. Furthermore, it is essential to promote and reinforce this stance through influential media channels.
How essential is heritage and/or a distinctive identity in contributing to a brand’s success?
The heritage and distinct identity of a brand are the most important keys to success in fashion. The high aesthetic sense and exceptional craftsmanship that this heritage guarantees creates trust in quality and differentiation, attracting the global market. On this foundation of heritage, the free creativity that talented designers can express is supported by traditional craftsmanship, the cultural heritage of the industry, "savoir-faire," renewing the dialogue with consumers. Therefore, the importance of long-term cultural policies and strategies goes without saying.
What surprises you about the industry in 2025?
In the fashion industry, I believe there will be surprising developments far beyond my imagination. Technological advancements in production processes and design are remarkable, particularly in areas such as the development of new fabrics and clothing through biotechnology (e.g., carbon-neutral fabrics produced using bio-based technologies), as well as the AI-driven clothes, 3D printing, and other innovations. These advancements, achieved through interdisciplinary and global collaboration, are driving significant transformations in the industry and propelling the fashion sector forward. On the other hand, I believe the importance of traditional production systems is growing more than ever. For example, the textile industry in Kyoto, which has a long history and tradition, is a highly advanced and specialised industry that creates unique technologies found nowhere else in the world. When such traditional production systems engage in global collaboration and new technologies, they can produce outstanding results.
What is the most significant driver of change in fashion right now?
Consumer behavior is showing a shift from focusing on "things" to prioritising "experiences" and "moments." The privileged notion of couture —clothing made exclusively for an individual, the process from order to completion, and the slow passage of time in between — aligns with the preferences of affluent Millennials, who are said to favour experiences over possessions. This trend suggests that high-end brands could potentially serve as a model for the future of the fashion business. The creativity of designers in high-end brands is also crucial. Take Demna Gvasalia of Balenciaga. While showcasing a refined sensibility for the structural artistry essential to luxury brands, he introduces fashion that resonates with street culture and youth. Particularly in styling — a domain that emerges spontaneously and reflects the spirit of the times and fresh perspectives — he delivers precise ideas that captivate his young supporters. Moreover, his introduction of men's fashion within haute couture is especially noteworthy as a bold statement against the binary division of gender, aligning with significant societal shifts. By targeting new customer demographics, he effectively builds what he calls a "bridge between the past and the present." Fashion possesses an aspect of being a form of artistic design. The pursuit of innovative and sometimes experimental creations serves as a driving force, propelling fashion forward. As haute couture stands at the forefront of creation, functioning as an advanced experimental arena, I find myself deeply captivated by haute couture, ever before, as it strives to realize these visions.
Who or what is generating the greatest influence in fashion today?
No single entity or movement is driving fashion. Rather, it is a blend of visionary leaders, consumer demand, technological advancements, and cultural shifts. However, the influence of street culture and subcultures, related to online games, Manga, and K-Pop, Influencers and key figures through SNS and other platforms are immeasurable. Additionally, the importance of environmental ethics must not be overlooked.
Do trends still matter?
Trends still play a significant role in fashion. Because they are generated by the cultural, social, and political ideas and moods that dominate the people of the time. Fashion cannot garner support unless it captures trends born from the zeitgeis: the cultural, social, and political ideologies and sentiments that dominate an era. Precise trends have the power to renew and invigorate both fashion and our lives. At the same time, it is undeniable that consumers are becoming increasingly skeptical of seasonal trends. There is a growing inclination toward enduring, eco-conscious designs and products, reflecting a sense of remorse over excessive consumption. More people are prioritising self-expression over blindly following trends. Trends are no longer about the illusion of being "in" or "out," freeing individuals from such dichotomies. This shift also explains why unique and distinctive brands, which stand apart from trends, are so beloved. In any case, trends are always important in fashion, not in the narrow sense of trends, but in the broader sense representing the mood of the time.
