Rokh’s Romantic Future

Interviews

Rok Hwang founded Rokh in 2016 after designing for prominent fashion houses such as Céline (under Phoebe Philo), Louis Vuitton and Chloé. His namesake brand reflects the notion that every piece should be structured, timeless and above all, adaptable.

How do you define the future?
I always imagine the future; it is the most important consideration in my creations. For me the future is romantic.

Why is the future such an important element of fashion?
Future embodies our aspirations, hopes and dreams. It shares the same values as fashion.

What is one global or social issue currently shaping  fashion’s future?
There are lots of political opinions and issues in fashion — social, environmental and more. The way I see the future of fashion is more harmonious. These days, creation isn’t only about giving direction; it is more what we share with viewers and customers. I think this balance is meaningful; and soon, in the future, we will find the balance.

How do you imagine fashion changing over the next decade?
Individuality.

How do you imagine your brand evolving over the next decade?
We have had many chapters of evolution. For me, what I am now focusing on is creating and defining the brand’s DNA and codes. I want to create a lifestyle for the brand and share this idea and philosophy with my viewers and customers. It is not just fashion; I see life and humanity.

What concerns you about the future?
Nothing. Seeing is believing!

What excites you about the future?
Hoping and dreaming about something that you don’t have now. The possibilities are endless.

Your wish for the future?
Many. I want to constantly think of something that could be created — something that doesn’t exist now but could happen in the future.

Do you think about the future when creating a collection?
Always. Sometimes it is the near future and sometimes it is very far. But this doesn’t mean I imagine it like sci-fi.  I imagine it in the most realistic way and in a practical manner.

What is the most defining idea or look in this collection?
The season’s random identity and codes. The juxtaposition of ideas has been a key element in our creations. We wanted to close two different universes of utilitarian work wear and elegant evening dress codes.

How does this collection compare to your past collections?
The creations are sharing the same values and concepts. I want to approach the collection with my vision of a woman and how I always see the same woman.

What remains constant across the past, present, and future of fashion?
Humankind. It may be for practical reasons or aesthetically, but the purpose is to live and share ideas with people.
