Through the Eyes of Wales Bonner
By Laurence Benaïm
“A study of singular beings, magnificent strangers, ever-soaring in art and life.”
— Grace Wales Bonner
How do you see the Wales Bonner Autumn Winter 2023 collection?
The Autumn Winter collection acts as a study of diverse artistic traditions in Paris. I was thinking about seminal artists’ “Paris years” and what the space had opened up for them on a creative level. Characters I had in mind, who continue to inspire me, were James Baldwin, Josephine Baker and the Maharaja of Indore.
Do the artists you celebrate have a special way of seeing the world?
I am always interested in freedom of expression, and I was thinking about these individuals who live their lives like a work of art.
In 2024, you will celebrate the 10th birthday of your brand. How do you look back on your own history?
Wales Bonner has always stayed true to the mission of elevating the location of Blackness within culture and infusing European luxury with an Afro-Atlantic spirit. Highlights include our show in Pitti Uomo last season at the Palazzo Medici and our recent show in Paris. I am also incredibly proud and honoured to have worked with visionary artists including Kerry James Marshall and Lubaina Himid .
Why Paris is so inspiring for you?
I feel there is a fresh energy in Paris, and there is a high level of execution and sophistication that has been present for hundreds of years.
How or where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I am really excited to continue to expand on the universe that surrounds Wales Bonner.
