A conversation with Sean Suen

Designer Sean Suen answers questions on this season’s theme, Evolution.

Tell us about the Yi ethnic group from Southwest China you have explored this season?

The Yi people of Daliang is an ethnic minority group who came from the snow in the fairy tale.  The myths and beliefs here all but manifest the simple and tenacious characteristics of this nation.  

Which elements of this culture have influenced you?

Their fiery emotions, their admiration for natural spirits and unique national costumes. 

How does this collection evolve upon previous seasons?

It is a more oriental aesthetic style, I hope to consider, along with the wearer, the intrinsic quality of human self-awareness through the lens of an ancient oriental culture – and to experience the most authentic beauty from all creatures.

Where are you noticing the most significant changes in fashion today?

The integration between the national cultures.

What creates an emotional response for you in fashion today?

Exploration of daily emotional experience and self-cognition.
