A Take on Fashion: Tomoki Sukezane
Based in Tokyo, Tomoki Sukezane is a style icon and fashion editor who regularly contributes to magazines such as Casa Brutus, GQ Japan, Uomo and Engine. He also works as a stylist for artists and actors. In 2013, he published the book “The Discreet Charm of Tomoki Sukezane” about his personal and singular style.
In what ways are you seeing fashion adapt to — or be transformed by —the ongoing global and industry challenges?
Amidst the Covid-19 crisis, the evolution of technology is changing our daily lives. Since the pandemic started last year, I have seen the online fashion shows and experienced shopping through e-commerce connected to social media. But so far, I haven’t felt the same excitement I had before Covid-19. The contactless era could soon become normality, but for that to happen, I guess I might have to change myself first. From where should I start? I’m still searching for ways to adapt to these changes.
What is one trend or article of clothing that will define the coming year?
I honestly don’t know what everyone wants to wear now. Personally, I miss the nights out and cocktail parties; therefore I am in the mood to dress up. For this reason, I’m interested in new kinds of ties and innovative evening shirts that have never been seen before. And, following my feeling, maybe a long jacket made of light and soft material in three-quarter length with wool flared slacks could also be a “must” item.
What is something you’d love to see in the future — even if it’s the stuff of fantasy?
Stylish space suits; rockets with cool designs; and stylish aliens? It may be!
